About Ueki no Housoku
Ueki no Housoku is the debut series of manga-ka Tsubasa Fukuchi, which was initially released in 2002 via Weekly Shonen Sunday. The series consists of sixteen volumes for the manga and fifty one episodes for the anime. The manga also comes with a sequel, entitled Ueki no Housoku Plus (The Law of Ueki Plus).
Ueki no Housoku follows the story of Kousuke Ueki of Class 1-C at Hinokuni Junior High School and is told through the eyes of his fellow classmate Ai Mori. The story focuses on the themes of justice and friendship.
The series opens with Ai Mori keeping a close watch on Kousuke Ueki, sure that he is an alien sent to Earth due to Ueki's strange powers to create trees from apparently thin air. As Mori continues observes Ueki's strange behaviors and actions, she comes to know that her homeroom teacher, Mr. Kobayashi (Mr. K for short), is actually a celestial candidate in the tournament to find out who gets to become the next Celestial King. In this tournament, each celestial candidate gets to choose a junior high school student as his or her fighter for the tournament.
As it so happens, Ueki's power to create trees, in which Mori later learns that the ability is actually turning trash that fits into the palms of his hands into trees, was actually given to him by none other than Mr. K. Along with this power, Mr. K puts Ueki through a series of (unbeknownst to Ueki) trials, testing to see just how strong Ueki's sense of justice truly is. However, part way through these trials, Mori learns that if Ueki uses his power to turn trash into trees to hurt anyone who isn't a participant of the tournament, Ueki loses a talent. If and when his talents hit zero, Ueki disappears. Determined, Mori sets out to protect Ueki and his talents!
Other fairly important characters include Seiichiro Sano, Rinko Jerrard, Inumaru/Wanko, Robert Haydn, Hideyoshi Soya, Tenko and Anon.
